The Internet has undoubtedly changed the way that information systems are developed, particularly in the area of user interface design and increased openness and interoperability through the adoption of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) based data standards and .NET web services. As the Internet matures from a cyberbrochure into a space for inter-organizational information systems many of the old values of information system development, such as systems analysis methods and database design, have been rediscovered and their usefulness reinforced. The challenge for the information system developer of the 21st century is to respond to the opportunities afforded by the Internet while at the same time retaining traditional skills in information system development and software engineering.
